It's an excellent idea to check your fluids, tires, the battery and the windshield wipers on your Buick Century so you can drive down the road with confidence.
There are a number of fluids you can monitor in your Century. Check the brake fluid level. This indicates how much fluid is in the master cylinder. To do so, first locate the brake fluid reservoir. After you have found it, observe whether the fluid is between the minimum (MIN) and maximum (MAX) levels. If the fluid is low, add brake fluid. Instructions below.
To prevent brake system contamination, wipe the reservoir cover with a clean rag. Now lift off the cover. Add only the specific brake fluid recommended for your Buick Century. You can find the type of brake fluid you need for your Century in your owner's manual or in a repair manual written specifically for your Buick Century. (Warning: Using a mixture of different types of brake fluid or the wrong type of fluid can damage the brake system and effect the ability of your brakes to effectively stop your Buick Century. Do not use brake fluid that is more than one year old or fluid that has been stored in a container that has been left open. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air; excessive moisture in the fluid can cause a dangerous loss of braking power.) If your brake fluid is consistently empty or low when you check it, have your brake system repaired soon.
It is essential to have a properly working windshield washing system on your Century. Winter driving issues and occasional road hazards demand it. This means you should check the level of your windshield washing fluid often. Many cars, like your Century, have warning lights that indicate if the fluid is low. When the warning light comes on, it's time to check the fluid level. Open the hood and locate the washer fluid reservoir cap. Remove the cap and fill the reservoir full with washer fluid up to the MAX line. (Tip: Many station wagons, SUV and crossover vehicles have a separate reservoir for the rear window. Check in your Buick owner's manual for the location of the reservoir and fill it to capacity.) There are many windshield washer fluids from which to choose today. Some contain anti-rain drop and anti-smear compounds; others are especially-formulated for serious winter cold. Select the fluid best for your needs.
It's a good idea to check the condition of your windshield wipers periodically. If you find damaged, loose, cracked components, or worn wiper blade elements, replace the windshield wiper assembly. To do so, lift the arm assembly away from your Buick Century windshield. Pry up on the release lever, then slide the blade assembly out of the hood in the end of the arm. Attach the new wiper to the arm; you will hear an audible "click" when it is properly installed.
Tires are another care area. Check for unusual wear patterns. These can indicate over-inflation, under-inflation, or misalignment. Fill to capacity indicated in your owner's manual.
Check your battery for corrosion. Also check the battery cables and monitor them for cracks, breaks, or scoring from heat. Check the battery terminals for corrosion and damage.
