Here's how to install a new battery in your.
Note: these are generic instructions. Refer to a current repair manual for specific Buick Century instructions.
Batteries can last anywhere from about three years to five years or longer. Obviously if your Century refuses to start, you know you need a new battery. Failure to start means you may have gotten yourself into an embarrassing situation, one that could also be potentially difficult. If your vehicle does not start, you cannot drive to your destination, and you could possibly be without vehicular transportation until you install a new battery.
You can determine if you need a new battery before it fails. To do this, check the "indicator eye" (if your battery has one). This is a glass lens on the top side of the battery. A green color eye means it is OK to test the battery, but it does not necessarily mean the battery is usable or "good."
In order to test the battery yourself, you will need a voltmeter. However, most auto stores and repair facilities will test your battery for you free. (Of course, these establishments offer this service in hopes that you will buy a battery from them if you need a new one.)
If you need to replace the battery, you can do it yourself. First purchase a good, reliable battery. Keep this in mind: your battery is the heart of your electrical system. Without a good battery, the other parts of the system will not perform like they should. These components include the alternator, the starter, charging system, the lights and all of your accessories like sound and video systems. So buy a good battery even if it costs you a little more.
After you have bought your new battery, the thing you need to do next is remove the old one. (Caution: before doing any work around your battery, make sure your ignition is in the off position.) To do this, remove the protective cover, if there is one, from the battery. Disconnect both cables from the battery. (Caution: always remove the negative cable first and connect it last. Otherwise you may short the battery with the tool you are using to loosen the cable clamps. Never disconnect or connect a battery cable with the engine running.) Now remove first the hold-down bolts and then the battery hold-down bracket. Lift out the battery. Use a lift strap that attaches to the posts to lift out the battery safely and easily.
Before installing the new battery, check the condition of your cables. Look for corrosion and damage on the ends of the terminals, and chaffing, cracks, exposed wire, and burned or melted insulation on the cables themselves.
Install your new battery using the reverse procedure as removal.
Bear in mind that most vehicles have memory chips that control things like drive train operation and fuel mixture. Disconnecting the battery often requires that these computer chips "re-learn" their function. Most of these devices re-learn what they need to know automatically. However, you may experience slightly different or slightly more difficult handling for a short period after installing your new battery in your Buick Century.
